Dogberry and Verges instruct the night watch in their duties with comic incompetence, advising them largely to avoid confronting any actual troublemakers. In the street, a drunken Borachio boasts to Conrade about how he wooed Margaret at Hero's window while Don John watched with Claudio below — and how Claudio now believes Hero guilty of betrayal. The Watch overhears every word and arrests them both.
